George's Accomplishments

His accomplishments, mixed with the symptoms of CF, make his life a triumph.

"Against All Odds"

1966; Born March 21, 1966, George Lewis Carman, son of Shirley and the late Paul Carman of Buxton, Maine was diagnosed at birth with CF, given four days to live and hospitalized for nine months

1967-1971; Lived in an oxygen tent day and night, took 21 pills at every meal

1971; Started kindergarten at age five (like other kids) and lost no days, kept up with all the other children at school

1974-1980; Volunteered for events at a local nursing home and at Pineland Center for the mentally handicapped

1980-1984; Ran track and x-country all four years in high school, team captain two years. Student Council four years

1985; Ran 5K road race for Special Olympics, came in 3rd in his age category

1989-2000; Employed at Bath Iron Works in the tin shop. Served as shop steward for 3 years

1989; Met Amy, daughter of David & Shirley Oliver of Millinocket, Maine

1990; Joined Yarmouth Fire Department to fulfill his dream of being a firefighter, against doctor's advice

1992; Married Amy, the love of his life

1994; Built family home, joined New Gloucester Fire Department

1994-present; Takes every training offered including; cold-water rescue, pump operations, vehicle extrication, leadership seminars, safety courses and others

1997; Drove Al Gore's photographers on a campaign stop

1998; Joined Masons

1999; Daughter, Annie born

2002; Fire Chief's Award

2004; Firefighter of the Year Award

2005; New Gloucester Community Fair dedicated to George. October 15th, was declared New Lungs for George Day.

2007; Organized Honor Guard for New Gloucester Fire Rescue.
